Department of Chemistry

The Chemistry deparment was established in 1947. In 1965 under the outstanding leadership of Prof. John Barnabas, FNA, FASC , Bhatnagar awardee put up the novel course in M.Sc Biochemistry and first in the Pune university. He started the course primarily to teach M.Sc in Biochemistry along with a research team of Ph.D students. In 1970 M.Sc Organic chemistry was added to the Biochemistry Department to tackle the need of chemical industry. The department produced many excellent biochemists both Ph.D. and M.Sc in the following years. In 1984 the PG School for its outstanding research and academic contribution was recognized by the UGC by awarding the COSIST program and grant to enable the school to develop a centre of excellence in Biochemistry & Organic chemistry. The school was thus to become an autonomous centre under the academic flexibility program of UGC & University of Pune. Department has academic flexibility to frame the syllabus, coduct the examination & the award of degree. To honour the contribution of late Prof. John Barnabas, department was renamed as Dr. John Baranabas Post Graduate School for Biological Studies. In 1996 the M.SC Drug chemistry program was introduced to cater the need of Pharma R & D's in drug discovery. This was the first of its type in India. We have provided some very good chemists to the top Pharma industry since then. Right from the inception of department, the active research in biochemistry & organic chemistry was started & is going on till date. The department has produced research scholars, academicians & experts in various fields of chemistry. Post graduate students of department find good placements in chemical & pharmaceutical industries. The department has also produced the good number of SET/NET-CSIR qualified students. Research centre of department has produced good number of PhD scholars.

At present there are five research guides & six research scholars who are engaged in research work. Some staff members have recieved funding from BCUD, DST, UGC for minor & major projects. Department has also recieved funding from DST under the programme of FIST. The department has twenty highly qualified staff members which includes ten PhD holders & remaining NET/SET qualified.
