ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

-BPHE Society’s Ahmednagar College is the pioneering institute in Ahmednagar District to cater to higher education. Presently, the institute offers higher education through 24 UG courses, 23 PG courses and 09 research centers from different faculty. The department of psychology is one of the academically vibrant departments among them. The department of psychology has been functioning since the establishment of Ahmednagar College. At the establishment of Ahmednagar College the philosophy and psychology subject was offered under the same roof. Later on it started functioning independently. In 1956, the department of psychology received permission to offer psychology at undergraduate level. Initially the permission was given to offer psychology at a general level. However, in 1967 the department received permission to offer a psychology subject at a special level. Since 2010-11, (year 2011-12 as per approval conditions) the department of psychology started offering a post-graduate degree program. The department offering the post graduate degree in three specializations i.e. Clinical Psychology, Industrial Psychology and Counseling Psychology. The post graduate course inaugurated by the hands of Ms Nilima Mishra, recipient of Magsaysay Award-2011. The department of psychology is recognized as a research center to offer a PhD degree program. The department is offering a PhD degree program from the year 2022-23.

-Founder of Ahmednagar College and the first Principal Rev Dr B P Hivale was the first head of the department. Dr B P Hivale was a scholar of philosophy discipline. Dr Manorama Barnabas followed the footprints of Dr B P Hivale. Dr Manorama Barnabas was from philosophy discipline. Principal Dr P S Jacob became the next head of the department. Dr P S Jacob was Ph D as highest qualification from psychology discipline. During his headship the department of Psychology started functioning independently. Mr Henant Gokhale was the next head of the department. Hemant Gokhale was mastered in philosophy. In 1998, Mr Abhay Shaligram, M.A. (Industrial Psychology) became the Head of the psychology department. He completed his PhD degree on decision making of mahila sarpanch in 2013. During his headship, the department organized one state level conference, two university level conferences and many more guest lectures. In 2022, Prof Dr Pritamkumar Bedarkar, M.A. (Clinical Psychology), PhD became the Head of the department. He has completed his PhD degree on longevity among HIV+ patients. Under his headship the department recognized as a research center. Dr Suresh Kawane, Dr Nivrutti Pawar, Mr Wagh, Mr Sambhaji Kangune, Dr Ezaz Shaikh, Ms Priti Salvi, Ms Sukanya Phansalkar, Mr Madhukar Kale, Ms Tejaswini Aher, Mr Santosh Shelke, Dr Hemant Kulange, Ms Yogita Khedkar, Mr Vijay Sathe, Ms Apurva Kale, Ms Geetanjali Avhad, Mr Adil Mistry contributed to the department in various academic capacities. Moreover, Dr Ezaz Shaikh and Dr Abhimanyu Dhormare affiliated to the research Center as a PhD guide. Renowned Psychiatrists from Ahmednagar City Dr Anay Kshirsagar, Dr Amit Sapkal, Dr Prasad Tagad guiding the post graduate students for their case study, as a part of curriculum. As an outcome of the support from management & administration and sincere efforts of the faculties, the students of the department attended a great success. The expertise of the students can be clustered in three major areas i.e. teaching, counselling and independent practice.

The department of psychology is happy to inform you that eight Army Officers have completed their Master degree from our department and we are dreaming more to come. Medical practitioners Dr Rahul Patni, Dr Shama Mantri, Dr Nujhat Sayyed, Dr Shaikh, Dr Jyoti Tanpure, Dr Hemant Kulange, Dr Prasad Ubale, Dr Tanuja Yadav have completed their masters from our department.
